History

A man named David Lesley built the Burt-Stark Mansion in the 1830’s. Lesley was a planter, lawyer, and an Abbeville District judge. The Burt-Stark Mansion is built Greek Revival style. Here at the Burt-Stark Mansion on May 2, 1865, the Confederate President Jefferson Davis held his last council of war of the Confederacy. It was there that he admitted, “All is indeed lost.”  Mary Stark Davis, the last surviving member of the family that bought the house in 1900, donated her historic home and its contents to the Abbeville County Historic Preservation Commission so it could be preserved for future generations.
