Donaldson Center

Donaldson Center gave Greenville the name of "Air Lift Capital of the World" after World War II. The base was first activated in 1942 as an Air Force base after the U.S. entered World War II. The base really encouraged Greenville to get involved in the war. It was originally named Greenville Air Force Base until it was renamed Donaldson Air Force Base in honor of Major John W. Donaldson, a local son and flying ace. In the 1950's the base became permanent, flying cargo and men throughout the world. The base closed in 1962 because of Federal cutbacks but now is home to many commercial businesses.
