A man name Augustin Fresnel invented the Fresnel lens. It is what intensifies the light as it rotates moves around. Because of its amazing efficiency the lens could easily throw its light 20 or more miles to the horizon.
  • The first Order lens had round areas that would bend the light into a beam.  They were used to create a flashing effect. It also has a red panel for a red flash.

  • The Second Order lens was used on the coast and as warning lights to mark land, dangerous shoals, rocks or reefs. It was used quite frequently in the Great Lakes Lights, on islands, and in sounds.

  • The third order lens is cut to simulate a diamond for a more powerful flash. It magnified the flashes tremendously.

  • The fourth order Fresnel Lens magnified a 1,000 watt bulb so that the ten-second flash could be seen 17.5 miles away
