August 17,1969 Hurricane Camille hit the Mississippi Gulf coast. People were in so much disbelief that they didn't worry about it, but that morning people started to believe. Final data on the storm has reported of 210 mph wind and 24 ft surge topped with 10 ft sea. Many of the people who stayed at home to ride out the storm, lived to regret it. Some people did not live through the storm. The latest survey showed 134 deaths; 27 missing;8,931 injured; 5,662 homes destroyed and 13,915 suffering major losses. The total destruction area of Harrison County alone was 69 square miles. Due to early warning, not as Big as other hurricanes. |
